Guide to OJA Tournament Format - Part 1

DisclaimerThe promoter for the event determines the format for the day so while the summary below reflects the current precedent set by OJA sanctioned events specific tournaments sanctioned by OJA may vary.

Kids I (Age 5-6) & Kids II (Age 7-8) - Round Robin

Each child will be weighed prior to the start of the age group and placed into the correct weight bracket.

Should the number of competitors in a weight bracket exceed 5 it will be split into parts consisting of no more than 5 competitors.  For example, 1-5 competitors will compete in a single round robin, 6-10 competitors will be split into Part 1 and Part 2 and compete as two separate round robins, 11-15 competitors will be split into Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 competing as three separate round robins.  Each part of the bracket will be contested as a round robin, all competitors competing against one another in a single match.

The winner of each part of the bracket will be determined by the competitor with the most wins.  If two or more competitors are tied the winner of the match between the two tied competitors will be awarded first place.  If more than two competitors are tied for overall wins the competitor who accumulated the most total points in all of their matches will be awarded first place.  Same method is used to break ties for second place.  All competitors will be awarded a medal with the part of the bracket they participated in, no competitor will be on the podium with another competitor they did not compete with.

As an example:

2013 Ontario Open - Kids II Open - White Belt - Rooster Weight

As per above 15 competitors will be split into Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 to compete as three separate round robins, each with 5 competitors.  The competitors will be randomly divided into one of the three parts with every effort made to divide up team mates into separate parts.  This results in the following:

Kids II Open - White Belt - Rooster Weight - Part 1
  1. Conner Green
  2. Kai Levine
  3. Kyan Dava
  4. Logan Parada
  5. Nathanial McAlpine

Each of the Parts is run as a separate round robin that would look as follows:

The table coordinator will run the matches as listed above from 1 through 10 giving competitors rest periods as required and recording the results of each match as shown above.  Once all ten matches are complete the totals are compiled as follows.

(Please Note:  These are not the actual results from the 2013 Ontario Open, but this works as an example.)

Totals:

    CompetitorTotal WinsTotal Points
    1Eduardo Chavez27
    2Ethane Layne37
    3Evan Hiedman00
    4Marek Satov23
    5Mustafa Haddad39
Competitor 2 and 5 are tied for wins.  To break the tie we refer to their match in the round robin, match 4.  Since Ethane won this match he is awarded the gold metal and Mustafa is awarded the silver medal.  The remaining competitors are awarded a bronze medal. Note, total points are calculated by subtracting points scored against from points scored for the winning competitor.  For example in match 6 Mustafa scored 10 and Evan scored 4, 10-4=6 points to add to Mustafa's total.

Results:

    1Ethane LayneGold Medal
    2Mustafa HaddadSilver Medal
    3Eduardo ChavezBronze Medal
    4Evan HiedmanBronze Medal
    5Marek SatovBronze Medal
These five competitors will stand on the podium together for their medal ceremony and at no time should they be on the podium with members of Part 1 or Part 2 of the bracket as part of an official medal ceremony.  Competitors will only be awarded medals with those who participated in the same Part of the bracket.
