Guide to OJA Tournament Format - Part 2

DisclaimerThe promoter for the event determines the format for the day so while the summary below reflects the current precedent set by OJA sanctioned events specific tournaments sanctioned by OJA may vary.

Kids III (Age 9-10), Youth (Age 11-12) & Teen (Age 13-15) - Round Robin with a Final

Each competitor will be weighed prior to the start of the age group and placed into the correct weight bracket.

Should the number of competitors in a weight bracket exceed 5 it will be split into parts consisting of no more than 5 competitors.  For example, 1-5 competitors will compete in a single round robin, 6-10 competitors will be split into Part 1 and Part 2 and compete as two separate round robins, 11-15 competitors will be split into Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 competing as three separate round robins.  Each part of the bracket will be contested as a round robin, all competitors competing against one another in a single match.

The winner of each part of the bracket will be determined by the competitor with the most wins.  If two or more competitors are tied the winner of the match between the two tied competitors will be awarded first place.  If more than two competitors are tied for overall wins the competitor who accumulated the most total points in all of their matches will be awarded first place.  Same method is used to break ties for second place.

For a single part round robin the first place finisher will be awarded the gold, second place the silver, and third and fourth the bronze medal.

Should the bracket have two parts the first place finisher of Part 1 and the first place finisher of Part 2 will compete in a single elimination match with the  winner awarded the gold medal and the other competitor the silver medal.  The second place finisher of Part 1 and the second place finisher of Part 2 will be awarded the bronze medal.

Should the bracket have three or more parts the first place finisher of each part will be placed in a final round robin with the first place finisher awarded the gold medal, second place the silver, and third place the bronze.

As an example:

Competitors:
  1. Alexey Mozolev
  2. Caleb Mulchan
  3. Eduardo Chavez
  4. James Cooper
  5. Arun Saini
  6. Connor Barber
  7. Jacob Marion
  8. Liam White
  9. Vito Cirone
  10. William Evans
  11. Ali Salem
  12. Justin Park
As per above 12 competitors will be split into Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 to compete as three separate round robins, each with 4 competitors.  The competitors will be randomly divided into one of the three parts with every effort made to divide up team mates into separate parts.  This results in the following:

Kids III Open - White Belt - Part 1
  1. Alexey Mozolev
  2. Liam White
  3. Jacob Marion
  4. Williams Evans
Kids III Open - White Belt - Part 2
  1. Caleb Mulchan
  2. Arun Saini
  3. James Cooper
  4. Ali Salem
Kids III Open - White Belt - Part 3
  1. Eduardo Chavez
  2. Connor Barber
  3. Vito Cirone
  4. Justin Park
Each of the parts is run as a separate round robin as described in the first post of this series to determine a first place finisher for each. The first place finisher of each part will compete in a final round robin to determine the medal finishers.  If Liam, James, and Eduardo each finished first in Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 respectively and final round would be as follows:

Kids III Open - White Belt - FINAL
  1. Eduardo Chavez
  2. James Cooper
  3. Liam White
The final round robin would be run as previous with the first place finisher being awarded the gold medal, the second place finisher the silver and the third place finisher the bronze.  For this example because the initial bracket was divided into three parts there is only one third place medal awarded.

Should this division have consisted of only eight competitors split into Part 1 and Part 2 as shown above and Liam and James being the first place finishers of their respective parts then Liam and James would meet in a single elimination match.  Should Liam win this final match he would be awarded the gold medal and James would be awarded the silver medal.  The bronze medal would be awarded to the second place finishers from Part 1 and Part 2, Alexey and Arun for example.  There is no third place match.
