Guide to OJA Tournament Format - Part 3

DisclaimerThe promoter for the event determines the format for the day so while the summary below reflects the current precedent set by OJA sanctioned events specific tournaments sanctioned by OJA may vary.

Junior (Age 16-17), Adult (Age 18-29), Master (Age 30-39) & Senior (Age 40+) - Single Elimination

Each competitor will be weighed prior to the start of the division.  Should a competitor weigh over the limit for the division in which they have registered the competitor will be disqualified and not able to compete.

The competitors will be arranged randomly in the single elimination bracket with team mates placed on opposite sides of the bracket if possible.  The bracket progresses with the winner of each match advancing to the next round and the opponent is eliminated from further matches until the final match.  The winner of the finals is awarded the gold medal, the opponent the silver.  The two competitors eliminated in the semi-final round of the bracket are awarded the bronze medal, they do not have a match.

Special Brackets - Only Two Competitors

In a division with two competitors both advance immediately to the final (Match 3) with the winner awarded the gold medal and the opponent the silver.  Only one match is contested.

Special Brackets - Only Three Competitors

A division with three competitors will be arranged as shown above.  The winner of Match 1 will advance to the final in position W1 in Match 3.  The loser of Match 1 will be placed in position L1 of Match 2.  The winner of Match 2 will advance to the final in position W2 in Match 3.  The loser of Match 2 is eliminated from the bracket.  The winner of the final (Match 3) is awarded the gold medal, the opponent the silver medal and the loser of Match 2 the bronze medal.

Example of a Typical Bracket

In a division of four or more competitors the bracket will be run in order from Match 1 with the winner advancing to the next round and the opponent eliminated from the division until only four competitors remain in the semi-final round.  In the example above the division started with four competitors.  The winner of Match 1 & 2 will advance to the finals, Match 3, in position W1 & W2 respectively.  The opponents of Match 1 & 2 are eliminated from the bracket but will be awarded the bronze medal.  Match 4 is not contested as both competitors finish in third place.  The winner of the final, Match 3, is awarded the gold medal and the opponent the silver medal.
